Invites Applications
For the
2017/2018 Paul G. Complin Memorial Scholarship
Field: Engineering or Science Related
Value: $1000 each
Number of Scholarships: 3
Criteria:
The Paul G. Complin Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually to three (3) students at Ontario’s post-secondary institutions who are pursuing programs related to engineering or the sciences. The scholarship fosters the furtherance of studies relating to the environment and sustainability, by striving to encourage young leaders to enter the environmental field and to stimulate professionalism. Therefore, the applicant must demonstrate the relationship between their field of study and the environment, or must be pursuing environmentally related post-secondary studies. Students fulfilling these criteria are encouraged to apply.
Application and Awards Process:
To apply for the Paul G. Complin Memorial Scholarship, please fill out the application form and send the form, plus all the requested supporting documents outlined in the application, to the AWMA (scholarships@awma.on.ca). Failure to supply all the requested information may result in applications being rejected.
The deadline to apply for a Scholarship Award is January 31, 2018.
A panel from the AWMA Ontario Section Board will review and evaluate all the submissions. The top finalists will be invited to deliver a 10-minute presentation on their research or course-work at an AWMA conference or event in spring 2018 (date TBD) and become Student Members of the AWMA (if they have not already joined the association), at which time the three winners will be selected. The AWMA Board will cover travel costs for students to attend this event.
The Scholarship finalists will be contacted by February 28, 2018.
Questions can be directed to scholarships@awma.on.ca
About Paul G. Complin:
Paul Complin (1945 – 2015) graduated with a Masters in Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1971 and worked in the field of environmental engineering, with an emphasis on air related issues, for over 40 years.
Paul held positions in government, consulting, and industry, and was well-liked and well-respected everywhere he went. He was the Principal of ORTECH’s Compliance and Permitting Group for 16 years and was a valuable resource and mentor to many. Paul was particularly active in the Air and Waste Management Association and was the chair of the Ontario Section for a number of years. Paul was uniquely capable of bringing people from different sides of an issue together.
To honour Paul's commitment to the AWMA Ontario Section for so many years, the annual student scholarships awarded by the Ontario Section have been named in his honour.
About AWMA:
The Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) is a non-profit, non partisan professional organization that enhances knowledge and expertise by providing a neutral forum for information exchange, professional development, networking, public education, and outreach to more than 8000 environmental professionals in 65 countries. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (ministry) is proposing to amend Ontario Regulation 419/05: Air Pollution - Local Air Quality (O. Reg. 419/05 or the “Regulation”) made under the Environmental Protection Act. The proposed amendments would introduce updated air standards for sulphur dioxide and clarify the requirements for assessing operating conditions in O. Reg. 419/05.

As part of Ontario’s commitment to fostering a more innovative and dynamic business environment, the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) is continuing to modernize the regulatory system for environmental approvals to reduce administrative burden and lower the cost of doing business.
Currently, Ontario businesses can apply for the Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) online and track the progress of their applications.
Starting in January 2018, the MOECC is implementing a one-year service standard for higher risk ECA applications received in 2018 and beyond. The MOECC will be able to put the review process on hold to give clients more time to provide additional information, if needed. Clients will be notified of the date and reason the review was put on hold, and what they need to submit to resume the review. The date of the one-year service standard will be adjusted accordingly. Clients and the public will also be able to view and track the progress of ECA applications online.
The MOECC is committed to working with clients to make it easier to complete high quality ECA applications. This will allow the MOECC to review and approve applications in a timely manner.
More details, including guidance material, will be posted on Ontario.ca prior to January 1, 2018. We ask that you share this message with your members, and if they have any questions, they can contact the MOECC at (416) 314-8001 or toll-free at 1-800-461-2690.
The MOECC will also be holding an information session in Toronto on Thursday, November 9, 2017, from 9:30am to 11am at the First Unitarian Church, 175 St. Clair Avenue West, to provide more details and answer questions. If you or your members are interested in attending this information session, please contact Megan Inacio at (416) 314-9401 or Megan.Inacio@ontario.ca.
Please provide the number of people attending by Thursday, November 2 so that we know how many to expect.
